About Uppsala University Hospital
Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala University Hospital, is Sweden's oldest University hospital.
The first department was established as early as 1708. We have a long tradition of being first. Sweden´s first nurse was trained here and Nobel Prize winners have researched here. The first Nordic appendectomy was performed here and the first integrated children´s hospital was built here. It is a characteristic of the activities here always to look for new, innovative solutions. We make the best use of new technology, new scientific findings and new ways of working in order to solve medical problems and to continuously improve the way we take care of our patients.
The Uppsala University Hospital is also one of Sweden´s largest hospitals. We offer medical and nursing care of the highest standard. The hospital is a source of both unique medical knowledge and the most advanced care available. Each year, over 700 000 people are cared for by us. We are a full-scale university hospital with 8 000 employees and 1 000 beds. Each year there are 55 000 admissions, 346 000 physician encounters and 318 000 out-patient treatments.
The University Hospital has several different roles- county hospital, specialist hospital, training hospital and research hospital. These various roles merge together in an average day, laying the foundation for and explaining the experience, expertise and empathy that exist here.
