Preparing for Your Test
Proper preparation ensures accurate results. Below is important information about food, fasting, clothing and other considerations.
Bring These Items
- Valid identification.
- Your referral or appointment letter.
We cannot perform testing without both documents.
Clothing
Blood samples are usually taken from the elbow crease. Wear clothing that can easily be rolled up or removed from the arm.
Food and Drink
Eat and drink normally, but avoid fatty foods and alcohol. If you must avoid certain foods, your doctor will inform you.
Fasting Before Testing
Follow these instructions if you need to fast:
- Do not eat or drink anything after 22:00 the night before.
- You may drink 1–2 glasses of water in the morning.
- Avoid smoking and using nicotine.
- Take medications as usual unless your doctor has given other instructions.
- Fasting samples are preferably taken before 10:00 in the morning.
Time of Day
Some hormones and substances vary throughout the day. For these tests, it is important to give your sample at the same time on each occasion, usually in the morning.
Physical Activity
Avoid strenuous physical activity the day before testing. Sit down for at least 15 minutes before the test, as stress, movement and posture can affect the results.
Medication Levels
For medication blood level testing, the sample is usually taken just before the next dose (e.g., before the morning dose). Take other medicines as normal unless your doctor gives other instructions.

Paternity Testing
We do not perform blood sampling for paternity testing. Paternity is established using cheek‑swab tissue samples, performed by municipal social services.
Participating in Research
During your treatment, you may be asked if you wish to participate in a research study to help increase knowledge about certain illnesses. Participation is completely voluntary and will not affect your care.
