A Special Workplace

We are a large hospital in a small city, combining international networks with a personal, human approach. As Sweden’s leading university hospital, we provide highly specialised care and operate at the forefront of medical technology. Everything we do is grounded in dedication, expertise and a strong sense of responsibility.

If you are considering joining us from abroad, we would be delighted to welcome you. Below, we have gathered useful information to guide you through the process.

Education Outside the EU/EEA

We are thrilled that you are interested in working with us – among 8,000 colleagues who take pride in both their competence and the relationships we build with patients, families and each other.

If you completed your education outside the EU/EEA but hold a licence issued in an EU/EEA country, and have worked under that licence for at least three years, you may apply as if your education had taken place within the EU/EEA.

Physicians and Nurses – Requirements

To apply for a position, you must:

  • Be proficient in Swedish.
  • Be familiar with Swedish healthcare legislation.
  • Hold a Swedish professional license to practise.

Physicians with Specialist Qualifications

When applying for your Swedish license, you must complete a six‑month probationary period. To apply for this period, you need to submit:

  • The decision from the National Board of Health and Welfare confirming your area of specialisation.
  • Proof of your Swedish language level.
  • A Curriculum Vitae.

Once you receive your Swedish license, you may begin your specialist training (ST). The standard length of this training is five years, but previous specialist training may be credited, reducing the total time.

Physicians without Specialist Qualifications

If you do not yet hold specialist qualifications, you must first complete a proficiency test and then undertake an internship (AT) lasting 18–21 months. This requirement applies even if you have practised as a physician abroad.

Nurses With or Without Specialist Qualifications

You must complete:

  • A medical proficiency test.
  • A test in Swedish healthcare legislation.
  • A two‑week placement in primary care.

After this, you will undertake a training period of at least three months in medicine, surgery or geriatrics.

Education Within the EU/EEA

Every day, people entrust us with their lives – a responsibility we are honoured to carry. With your skills, we can continue to make a meaningful difference.
