Our Purpose

We care for children who are preparing to undergo surgery, supporting them and their families throughout the experience.

Before Your Visit

Our goal is for both the child and their family to feel well prepared before surgery. When families feel informed and confident, children are more likely to feel safe and calm.

We adapt our information to each child’s age and needs. This may include spoken explanations, pictures, dolls, or interactive tools such as our Children’s Web. For example, children can practise placing a bandage or “giving an injection” to a teddy bear, helping them understand what will happen in a gentle and reassuring way.

During Your Visit

After surgery, the child will stay with us during recovery. Early movement, such as sitting up or getting out of bed, can support a faster recovery, but this is always adapted to how the child is feeling. Each child’s pace and comfort guide the care we provide.

Pain Relief

Effective pain relief after surgery is essential for healing and recovery. At Uppsala University Hospital, our staff carefully listens to the child’s own experience of pain.

Younger children may use a face scale, showing different facial expressions, to help communicate how they feel. This allows us to adjust pain relief appropriately and ensure the child is as comfortable as possible.
