How Self‑Referral Works

The most common way to submit a self‑referral is digitally through 1177.se, via the page of the specialist clinic you wish to contact. You can also send in a paper form by post. Please note that self‑referrals cannot be submitted by email, as they contain sensitive patient information that must not be sent electronically outside secure systems.

Your self‑referral is assessed in the same way as a referral from a doctor. The receiving specialist clinic will determine what type of care is appropriate and at what level. This means you may be redirected to your primary care clinic if specialist care at the hospital is not considered necessary.

If you submit a self‑referral from another region, you are not guaranteed care within a specific timeframe. The care guarantee applies only in the region where you are registered.

Second Medical Opinion

You have the right to request a second medical opinion if you have been diagnosed with a life‑threatening or particularly serious illness or injury.

Speak with your doctor or another staff member at the clinic where your first assessment was made. The physician responsible for your care is obligated to help you find another clinic that can provide the second opinion. You may also suggest a clinic or physician yourself.

The purpose of a second medical opinion is to help ensure that you receive the treatment and care that is best for you.
