Every day, our expertise, curiosity, and compassion come together to create the highest value for the people we serve.

Our Vision

Our vision is simple: to be the leading university hospital by creating the highest value for the people we care for.

Our Foundation and Roots

The roots of the hospital stretch back to 1708, when the first department was established. Since then, we have built a long tradition of pioneering achievements. Sweden’s first nurse was trained here, Nobel Prize laureates have conducted their research within our walls, the first appendectomy in the Nordic region was performed here, and the first integrated children’s hospital was created on our grounds. Innovation has always been part of who we are. We constantly seek new solutions – embracing emerging technologies, scientific breakthroughs, and modern ways of working to address medical challenges and continually improve the care we provide.

Uppsala University Hospital is also one of the largest hospitals in Sweden, offering medical and nursing care of the highest quality. The hospital is a hub of unique medical expertise and highly advanced care. Each year, more than 700,000 people receive treatment here. With 8,000 employees and 1,000 beds, we operate as a full‑scale university hospital. Annually, we manage around 55,000 inpatient admissions, 346,000 physician consultations, and 318,000 outpatient treatments.

The University Hospital fulfills several roles at once: it is a county hospital, a specialist hospital, a teaching hospital, and a research hospital. These responsibilities blend together in our daily work and form the foundation of the knowledge, skill, and compassion that characterize our care.
