About us

Since 1 September 2025, Uppsala University Hospital has provided National Highly Specialised Care (NHV) for patients with facial nerve palsy with flaccid paresis (more than 1 year after the onset of paresis) and children with congenital facial nerve palsy. Patients with complex synkinesis are also referred to Uppsala University Hospital for an individualised multidisciplinary assessment. Complex synkinesis refers to patients who, despite repeated attempts at regional treatment (irrespective of the type of treatment), continue to have problems with their synkinesis after at least one year, and other severe cases that cannot be managed regionally.

At Uppsala University Hospital, there is a multi-professional team that works with facial nerve palsy, the Facial nerve palsy team. The team consists of plastic surgeons, ENT doctors, physiotherapists and a contact nurse. Speech therapists, psychologists, counsellors, neurophysiologists and ophthalmologists are also available if needed.

The Facial paresis team is a rehabilitation team and receives patients from all over the country, as well as international patients via Uppsala Care.

National and health-regional cooperation

Uppsala University Hospital has a well-established cooperation with Region Sweden and other parts of the country. The Facial paresis team receives patients from all over Sweden. The Facial paresis team welcomes the exchange of expertise and has regular visitors, both nationally and internationally.

As an NHV centre, there is a responsibility for both training and skills transfer, and the Facial Palsy Team supports regional facial palsy centres.

Uppsala University Hospital is one of eight hospitals in Europe that are fully accredited in ERN - Congenital Facial Palsy (ern-cranio.eu).
