How National Highly Specialised Care works
National Highly Specialised Care (NHV) is care that is complex or unusual and can only be provided in a few locations in the country. By concentrating expertise in no more than five regions, better conditions are created for long-term development, enabling healthcare teams with broad and extensive expertise to share experience and provide patients with the very best care – regardless of where they live in Sweden.
National Highly Specialised Care (NHV) is based on close cooperation between the hospitals licensed to provide the care and those referring the patients. This collaboration is crucial to ensure that all patients receive equaltable and high-quality care.
The National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) decides which areas are covered by National Highly Specialised Care (NHV) and how many providers may deliver it. The NHV Board then decides which healthcare providers are granted licences.
