How our teams work
Our teams are made up of doctors and nurses specially trained in airborne intensive care. They are highly experienced, have established procedures and are used to providing extremely demanding care in a very limited space.
A specially trained anaesthetist and intensive care doctor and an anaesthetist or intensive care nurse with aeromedical training are always present on missions. A modern, airworthy intensive care incubator is used for incubator transport of premature or newborn babies. A neonatologist and neonatal nurse are then responsible for the care. Where necessary, care teams are complemented by specialised expertise, such as midwives or ECMO teams. Our work ensures minimum time outside the hospital and we always take medical responsibility from bed to bed.
Permanent teams provide security and stability
We are convinced that safe people perform better. In a service where the difference between life and death can be very small, we cannot afford to leave anything to chance. That's why we always work in fixed teams. It provides security and stability in a job that is otherwise often very unpredictable. The nurses, doctors and pilots in our teams are used to working together and we have a low staff turnover. Staff know what to expect, both from each other and from themselves. It provides a better and more stable outcome for our patients and clients. Of course, we always take medical responsibility from bed to bed.
Our services
Transports of adults and older children are always accompanied by a specialist anaesthetist and a specialist nurse in anaesthesia or intensive care, both with aeromedical training. The team plans and is responsible for the entire transport, from bed to bed. Because the staff have been working at Uppsala University Hospital for a long time, rapid redirections can be made if the patient's condition deteriorates or more investigations need to be carried out. This shortens the waiting time.
Most of the patients we see have head injuries or haemorrhages in the brain. The second largest patient group is from accidents that damage many organs in the body. The number of patients with multiple and severe fractures, particularly of the pelvis and vertebral column, has increased in recent years.
When needed, doctors with specialised skills, such as neurosurgeons or vascular surgeons, can accompany and care for the patient directly on site.
Our smallest patients are premature or newborn babies in need of neonatal intensive care and/or cardiac surgery. In these cases, with babies born as early as 23 weeks, a simple mistake such as changing a nappy can have devastating consequences. Therefore, the incubator flight team consists of a specially trained neonatologist and neonatal nurse.
Emergency transport
Priority 1 missions
In cases of breathlessness, chest pain, falls, road accidents and other serious illnesses, we are on the spot quickly and can start treatment at the scene of the accident or during transport to hospital. Frequently, the initial treatment is the difference between life and death.
We also reach people seeking help in inaccessible places such as islands and open country.
Our main partners are the ambulance services in Uppsala County, northern Stockholm and southern Gävleborg. Of course, we are also available for emergency missions in other areas where our medical expertise or transport capacity is needed. Our work ensures the least possible time out of hospital and our experienced staff follow well-established procedures that guarantee the best possible care.
Intensive care transport
The largest part of our service is the transport of very seriously ill people in need of uninterrupted and competent intensive care. Our missions take place both in Sweden and abroad, mostly by aeroplane.
In addition to our specialist team, we can always add the expertise needed for the specific case, whether it is neonatal care or any other form of complex and life-saving care.
