Our helicopter, a Leonardo AW 169

Thanks to our helicopter, we can be on the ground quickly even in inaccessible or remote locations. We fly 24 hours a day, all year round and the helicopter can get airborne within 5 minutes (30 at night) of an emergency alert. Always with a full intensive care team on board.

We fly a lot, no other hospital in Sweden treats as many patients from other regions as we do at Uppsala University Hospital. If necessary, we can also use aeroplanes together with Swedish Air Ambulance to resolve the mission, if the distances are long or if there are restrictions for the helicopter.

Our helicopter is a brand new, customised Leonardo AW 169 and is equipped with the latest navigation and avionics technology. It is a twin-engine model, used as an ambulance or intensive care helicopter in many different countries. The helicopter is 12.9 metres long with room for two pilots, an intensive care stretcher, a passenger and our specialist team. When transporting premature or critically ill babies, the team consists of a neonatologist and neonatal nurse together with their transport incubator.

Our equipment is customised with integrated systems for medical devices, oxygen and air on both intensive care stretchers and incubators. All medical equipment is tested and flight approved, with at least 7,500 litres of oxygen and medical air compressors on board helicopters and aircraft.

Flight facts:
