Referral to Paediatric Psychiatry
If you work with children and young people up to the age of 18, you can make a referral to BUP. We do not require you to belong to a specific professional group, but the referral must include:
- a clear psychiatric issue
- a justification of why the child or young person needs a specialised assessment.
Are you making a referral as school staff? You can make a referral from the school as a school psychologist, school nurse or school doctor. In the case of neuropsychiatric issues, only school psychologists and school doctors can make referrals.
Use our referral templates
Use the BUP referral template - it will help you to describe the child's situation in a structured way. This increases the possibility of an accurate assessment. Our referral templates are only available in Swedish.

Högspecialiserad vård vid svårbehandlade ätstörningar barn och unga under 18 år (pdf) (Highly specialised care for difficult-to-treat eating disorders in children and young people under 18)
For children with neuropsychiatric issues, there is a county-wide procedure:

Send the referral to the referral assessment team
Send the referral to the following address:
Remissbedömningsgruppen barn- och ungdomspsykiatri
Kungsgatan 38

Do you have questions about referrals? Contact BUP's telephone counselling service - we will be happy to help you.
What should the referral contain?
In order for us to assess the referral, you need to:
- describe the symptoms and behaviour of the child or young person
- indicate in which environments the problems arise (for example, home, school or leisure)
- show that the symptoms cannot be explained by a lack of adaptation or support from, for example, school or social services
- describe the interventions that have been tried and how they have worked
- describe what psychiatric issue is present
- indicate if there are suicidal thoughts or self-harming behaviour.
If the child is coping relatively well despite the difficulties, you should consider other interventions first, for example:
- paediatric psychologists in the county
- youth clinic
- student health
- counselling service in the municipality (if available).
How we assess referrals
All referrals received by BUP are recorded and assessed by our referral assessment team. The group decides whether the referral should:
- be accepted - if there is a clear need for specialised psychiatric care
- be rejected - if the need is not deemed to correspond to a specialised level
Referrals from, for example, school health services, youth clinics or health clinics are assessed in the same way as own requests for care.
During peak periods, we prioritise the children and young people with the most serious situations.
You will always receive a written response to the referral. Du kan läsa mer om BUP:s prioriteringar här (pdf). (You can read more about BUP's priorities here)
