Paediatric Neurology comprises the paediatric neurology service at Akademiska's core hospital site, the neurology outpatient clinic at Kungsgärdet Hospital and the medical services within paediatric habilitation.

There is close cooperation between the different components. Our work is largely carried out in multidisciplinary teams.

Patients who come to us

The most common reasons for children and young people to see a paediatric neurologist are epilepsy,brain tumours (in close collaboration with the Section for Paediatric Haematology and Tumour Diseases), nervous system injuries, neuromuscular diseases, nervous system malformations and various syndromes.  

Children and their families have access to hospital education, play therapy and hospital clowns. Support is provided by counsellors, psychologists and, if desired, by the hospital chaplaincy service.

Referral to Folke Bernadotte neurorehabilitation

Folke Bernadotte Neurorehabilitation is primarily aimed at the Region of Central Sweden, but also welcomes referrals from the rest of Sweden. Referrals may be submitted from both healthcare and habilitation services. Address the referral to Uppsala University Children's Hospital, Folke Bernadotte Neurorehabilitation, where it will be assessed and planned. You send the referral to Uppsala University Children's Hospital, Folke Bernadotte Neurorehabilitation, where we assess and schedule it.

For a referral concerning children and adolescents with a recent injury or illness to be assessed by us, you need to provide the following information:

• A clear question and problem description when requesting an investigation.
• A clear formulation of goals and expectations for the treatment period. 
• A current assessment by a paediatrician or paediatric neurologist and the involved allied health professionals (AHP).
• Background information regarding medical history and previous development.
• The child's current situation, clinical findings and growth chart.

For a referral concerning other children and adolescents to be assessed, reports of the following must also be given in addition to points 1 to 5:

• any investigations carried out and their results.
• treatments carried out and their results.
• the possibilities for the referring entity to follow up on an investigation or treatment intervention.

The referral must include relevant copies of medical records from physicians and allied health professionals, information about any risk of infection, and details of who is responsible for follow-up and continued treatment after the intervention provided by Folke Bernadotte Neurorehabilitation.
