Our purpose and operations

The Department of Oncology investigates and treats various tumor diseases. We offer several different types of chemotherapy, antibodies and other treatments. In the palliative care we offer highly qualified care and also offer support for relatives.

We train several different professions and conduct research on tumor diseases and new treatments.

IGP Uppsala University

The IGP department at Uppsala University conducts advanced research and education in areas such as clinical immunology, medical genetics and genomics, pathology, oncology, vascular biology, molecular tools and medical radiation sciences.

Our services

We offer several different types of chemotherapy, antibodies and other medicines. In palliative care, we offer highly specialised care and nursing, as well as support for family members.

We provide training for a wide range of professionals and conduct research into tumour diseases and new treatments.

In oncology, research is conducted in various tumour diagnoses such as breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, gynaecological cancer, brain tumours, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, lymphoma, oesophageal cancer, melanoma, prostate cancer, kidney cancer and bladder cancer.

Most of the clinical and academic research is linked to our own clinical research and development unit, KFUE. Research activities thus become a natural part of everyday clinical practice.

Anal cancer treatment

Uppsala University Hospital is one of four national centres for curative radiochemotherapy (RCT) in anal cancer.

Refer patient

Every week we hold a national multidisciplinary conference (MDC) where all new cases of anal cancer are discussed in terms of treatment options.

Patients with anal cancer who wish to be treated at Uppsala University Hospital and who do not belong to the hospital's catchment area are examined at their local hospital:

  • biopsy including P16 analysis
  • routine blood tests
  • MRI pelvis
  • PET/DT

The Oncology Section can be contacted for advice during the course of the investigation and can also arrange for a PET/DT scan if one cannot be done at the local hospital.

The referral must include

  • disease summary including comorbidities
  • general condition
  • copies of statements from the investigation.
