Haematology - for care providers
We investigate and treat blood disorders such as leukaemia, lymphoma and anaemia. We provide patients with advanced care, focussing on diagnosis, treatment and follow-up to improve health and quality of life.
About our services
The Haematology department provides outpatient and inpatient care for patients of all ages with diseases involving blood and bone marrow. Our services consist of the haematology clinic and blood ward 101 A, located in entrance 101, 4 stairs.
Examples of haematological diseases include acute and chronic leukaemia, myeloma, lymphoma, polycythaemia vera and myelodysplastic syndrome. Patients with other diseases, such as MS, are also cared for here when stem cell transplantation is part of the treatment.
Our catchment area is Uppsala, Dalarna, Gävleborg, Hälsingland, Södermanland, Värmland, Västmanland and Örebro County.
We actively work together with colleagues from all over Sweden and follow national treatment recommendations. Our treatment methods and outcomes are evaluated, quality controlled and subject to change, based on research and proven science.
We have just over 80 employees, including doctors, nurses, assistant nurses, physiotherapists and counsellors.
Clinical research
We conduct clinical research in several haematological diseases, infection and nursing. We are participating in several clinical trials including Phase I-II trials. Experimental studies are also being conducted with the help of partners, mainly at the ward for Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Genetics, in areas such ascytostatic resistance, CML and CLL.
We are also very active in national and international clinical trial cooperation. Uppsala is the coordinating centre for the Swedish ALL group (Heléne Hallböök) and the AML group (Martin Höglund).
Some clinical studies are conducted in cooperation with Regional Cancer Centres in Sweden
Quality development for JACIE accreditation
In 2023, the entire blood stem cell transplantation programme at Uppsala University Hospital received renewed accreditation from JACIE (the Joint Accreditation Committee of the [ISCT] International Society for Cellular Therapy and the [EBMT] European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation). The accreditation also now includes CAR T-cell therapy. The accreditation is valid for 4 years. Find out more about JACIE (ebmt.org).
