About our services

The section has access to 17 beds on weekdays and 12 on weekends in the gastrointestinal and renal ward 100 B2. In addition, there is a well-equipped gastrointestinal and liver clinic. Our staff consists of a number of specialists.

We have a well-developed collaboration with the interventional radiology unit for the treatment of patients with liver failure and portal hypertension, such as haemorrhagic varices, ascites problems and hepatorenal syndrome. This collaboration mainly performs TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt), but transjugular liver biopsies, hepatic vein stenting, portal circulation pressure measurements as well as local thrombolysis for hepatic thrombosis and embolisation of arteriovenous aneurysms (e.g. Mb Osler), collaterals in cirrhosis or other bleeding related to portal hypertension are also carried out.

Clinical quality and research projects involving the primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) patient group are ongoing to identify risk factors and the early stages of bile duct cancer.

We participate in regular liver rounds together with liver surgery, oncology and radiology units. They mainly discuss tumour cases and these rounds are also targeted at the wider region, when it is also possible to participate via link.

Under the national healthcare agreement, surgical liver transplantation activities have been concentrated at Karolinska Hospital/Huddinge. We collaborate with the transplant team at Karolinska Hospital in Huddinge and have a video conference once a week where we discuss the patients who have been examined for possible liver transplantation with us. Patients usually meet the transplant team at the conference and, if accepted for transplantation, are put on the list immediately. We therefore continue to investigate patients from Uppsala County and are happy to accept regional patients for investigation and assessment prior to possible liver transplantation.

We are able to perform complete investigations of the gastrointestinal tract, for example, in the investigation of gastrointestinal haemorrhages, including small bowel endoscopy with capsule camera and double balloon endoscopy. One of our major patient groups is patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).We meet regularly with the colorectal surgeons and have IBD rounds to discuss optimal treatment of severe IBD cases.

In addition, we have a collaboration with the Infectious Diseases Programme on viral hepatitis and its complications.

In motility, in cooperation with clinical physiology, we perform manometry of the oesophagus, ventricle and small intestine, as well as 24-hour pH measurements.

We report our results to the Nordic Liver Transplant Register and the IBD Register (Swibreg), among others.

Gastro Consultation

There is a gastroenterological and hepatological emergency line for queries from on-call doctors in the region on weekday evenings until 9pm and on weekends between 9am and 6pm.
