Emergency and Consultant Psychiatry - for care providers

Emergency and Consultant Psychiatry provides psychiatric care for acute conditions and consultations within the hospital. It includes the Psychiatric Emergency Department for Adults, the Psychiatric Emergency Care Unit (PAVA), the mobile unit PAM and the Brain stimulation clinic. As a care provider, you will find information on referral procedures, contact routes and how to refer patients to the right intervention.

Emergency and Consultant Psychiatry - for care providers

Emergency and Consultant Psychiatry provides psychiatric care for acute conditions and consultations within the hospital. It includes the Psychiatric Emergency Department for Adults, the Psychiatric Emergency Care Unit (PAVA), the mobile unit PAM and the Brain stimulation clinic. As a care provider, you will find information on referral procedures, contact routes and how to refer patients to the right intervention.

Psychiatric Emergency Department for Adults, Psychiatric Emergency Care Unit (PAVA) and Prehospital Emergency Psychiatric Mobile Unit (PAM)

The Psychiatric Emergency Department for Adults offers emergency assessments and can initiate inpatient psychiatric care for patients over 18. Patients apply on their own or are accompanied, for example, by relatives, police, ambulance and social services. The clinic is open 24 hours a day.

The Psychiatric Emergency Care Unit (PAVA) has 12 beds and offers inpatient acute psychiatric observation and care. The unit has short care times.

The Prehospital Emergency Psychiatric Mobile Unit (PAM) is also sometimes called the psychiatric ambulance. It is a mobile emergency psychiatric unit that is alerted via 112 to people in need of emergency psychiatric care outside the hospital. The unit works every day from 3pm-11pm.

Referral to the adult psychiatric emergency department

Make the referral to the receiving unit in Cosmic: Psychiatric Emergency Department for Adults (Request for care > Referral template Psychiatric Emergency Department for Adults - Request for care).  

The only compulsory heading is "Type of contact". "Question", "Status" and "Medical history" are important headings for prioritisation.

Referral to Emergency and Consultant Psychiatry

Make the referral to the receiving unit in Cosmic: Emergency and Consultant Psychiatry (Consultation referral > Referral template - Emergency and Consultant Psychiatry - consultation).

The only compulsory heading is "Telephone number of Referring unit", but "Question", "Status" and "Medical history" are important headings for prioritisation.

Referral to the Brain stimulation clinic

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a very effective treatment for severe depression, for example.

Receiving clinic: Emergency and Consultant Psychiatry (consultation referral - ECT - treatment consultation).

The referrals must be made by a specialist in psychiatry. Only referrals that follow the template will be accepted for processing. The referring specialist is responsible for the psychiatric follow-up of the patient during the ECT treatment and for follow-up afterwards. The referrals must be made by a specialist in psychiatry. Only referrals that follow the template will be accepted for processing. The referring specialist is responsible for the psychiatric follow-up of the patient during the rTMS treatment and for follow-up afterwards. Referral to the Veterans' clinic

People who have been on foreign service in a war zone or disaster area on behalf of a Swedish authority can apply themselves or be referred from primary care or specialist care throughout Sweden. We make assessments for suspected PTSD or other psychiatric illness related to this service. The possibility of free choice of care applies to the Veterans' clinic, as with all outpatient care.

Make the referral to the receiving unit in Cosmic: Emergency and Consultant Psychiatry (Referral type - Care request > Referral template - Veteran's clinic - care request). The referral has no compulsory headings.

Consultancy services

When a patient is admitted to Uppsala University Hospital, a psychiatrist from our Emergency and Consultant Psychiatry service can examine and assess the patient's mental health in other wards of the hospital. The Consultant works normal hours on normal weekdays, the psychiatric resident is responsible for the psychiatric assessments at other times.
