Clinical Research and Development Unit – for Healthcare Professionals
The Clinical Research and Development Unit plans and conducts clinical research in the field of Blood and Tumor Diseases. Our mission is to play an active role in stimulating and attracting academic and industry-sponsored research.
Our purpose and operations
We collaborate and counduct high quality studies in line with current laws and guidelines. Today, approximately 200 clinical studies are underway in various phases in areas such as oncology, heamatology and oncological endocrinology.
Our mission is to play an active role in stimulating and attracting academic and industry-sponsored research. We collaborate and conduct high quality studies in line with applicable laws and guidelines. Today, approximately 130-140 clinical studies are ongoing in different phases of oncology, hematology and oncologic endocrinology.
Our vision is to be a leading clinical trial unit that creates the greatest possible value for the patient and is an obvious choice for our partners and clients.
Our research
Since autumn 2000, we have experience in planning, starting and conducting clinical studies. KFUE consists of the Clinical Team, Phase 1, and the Clinical Trial Office (CTO). The staff includes research nurses, research assistants, project managers, an economist, and an administrator. The unit is led by a head of department and a medically responsible managing physician. Physicians from the various sections of Hematology and Oncology are affiliated with KFUE.
We collaborate with several other units at Uppsala University Hospital, including the Imaging and Functional Medical Center and several laboratories. KFUE conducts ongoing quality work to meet regulatory requirements and the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines in connection with clinical studies.
Studies at the Hematology and Oncology department
Studies intended to be conducted at the Hematology and Oncology department should be sent to study inquiries at KFUE. Subsequently, the study is prepared internally before being submitted to the KFUE Council for approval before it can commence. The KFUE Council meets twice a month.
Send your request for study initiation to studieforfragningar-bot@akademiska.se. The request can be sent by the sponsor or investigator at Uppsala University Hospital who has been asked to participate by a sponsor.
Phase 1 Unit
At the Phase 1 Unit at KFUE, early studies, known as First-In-Human studies, as well as other Phase 1 studies and early Phase 2 studies on patients are conducted. The unit is inspected and approved by the Medical Products Agency and comprises research nurses, nursing assistants, and physicians.
Referring a Patient to a Phase 1 Study
Referrals to the Phase 1 Unit are sent to the Onkologmottagningen, Blod och Tumörsjukdomar, Akademiska sjukhuset, attention to KFUE. Incoming referrals are assessed by the referral assessment group, which consists of physicians and research nurses.
We evaluate referrals once a week. The patient should be contacted when the referral is sent to us. This information should be indicated in the medical record or the referral from your end. If necessary, additional information may be requested. If the patient is considered suitable for a study, we schedule a first appointment for the patient.
The following documentation should be included with the referral:
- Patient's disease and general condition
- Diagnosis and current disease extent
- Summary of previous treatment
- Past/Present illnesses
- ECOG PS
