Thoracic Surgery and Anesthesia

Surgery staff on surgery.

The thorax department houses the University Hospital's special clinic for surgical treatment of diseases of the chest. Surgery for diseases of the heart, lungs and major blood vessels is carried out here. The most common diagnoses are coronary artery disease, valvular disorders, aortic rupture and pulmonary tumors. The department of thoracic surgery at the University Hospital was one of the first clinics in the country to carry out heart surgery with a heart-lung machine. Intensive research and development work has resulted in the current highly efficient operation. Each year, about 800 cardiac and 200 lung operations are performed. The department has its own intensive care unit with specially trained staff.
