Rehabilitation Medicine
Rehabilitation medicine is a separate medical specialty, whose basic idea is to support patients with medically based complex disabilities so they can reach as high a level of functionality and degree of autonomy
as possible. The main target groups are patients in need of specialized rehabilitation after an injury to the nervous system such as brain or spinal cord injury, patients with chronic neurologic diseases such as multiple sclerosis or the late effects of polio (post-polio syndrome), or those who have chronic pain. The unit primarily takes patients aged 16-65 years although, for patients with spinal cord injury, there is no real age limit.
