Endocrine Oncology

The endocrine oncology department is a national and international center to which patients with neuroendocrine tumors are referred. The staff have unique expertise in the areas of endocrinology, internal medicine and oncology. All the doctors carry out cutting-edge research in the areas of diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine tumors in addition to their clinical work and the department can offer many unique diagnostic and treatment options. The clinical care of patients often involves cooperation with other departments, such as endocrine surgery, clinical chemistry, pathology, radiology, oncology, nuclear medicine and the PET center. The PET center in Uppsala is the only center in the world that can offer tracers (5-HTP, L-DOPA) for neuroendocrine tumors.

Thanks to cutting-edge research and extensive patient data, the unit can obtain early access to new diagnostics and new treatment possibilities. Patients may be offered a personalized evaluation program that includes characterization of the tumor biology, which in turn allows individual adaptation of the treatment. Clinical trials of new treatments (alpha-interferon, somatostatin analogs, radiolabelled somatostatin analogs, etc.) have shown that both survival and quality of life of patients has improved.
