Neurology
People with diseases and functional disorders of the nervous system are cared for and treated in the neurology department. Neurologic symptoms can include changes in mobility, muscular strength or sensation, defective coordination of body functions, and sometimes aggressive episodes of epilepsy or migraine. The most important diseases and disorders are epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, headache, diseases of the peripheral nervous system and muscles, and tumors of the nervous system.
Strokes can be caused by a blood clot or bleeding in the brain. The primary responsibility for treatment of stroke lies with the stroke unit at the University Hospital, in cooperation with a neurologist. Nervous system disorders with emotional consequences or psychologic symptoms are handled by the psychiatric department. Some special areas include the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) department, the dystonia clinic, neurogenetics, the sweat clinic, the tumor clinic and vagus nerve stimulation.
