Airborne Intensive Care
Since 1993, the University Hospital has offered transport from hospital to hospital by helicopter. In 2008, it was the first hospital in Sweden to offer its own jet plane. Both the helicopter and jet can accommodate an entire intensive care unit and the full resuscitation team takes responsibility for the patient from pickup to dropoff at the University Hospital or another hospital in Europe. A specialist anesthetist and critical care physician and an anesthetic and critical care nurse with medical flight training are present on every trip. Premature babies or newborns are transported in a modern, flight-approved intensive-care incubator. A neonatologist and a pediatric nurse always go with the helicopter/airplane, and sometimes people with other specialties, such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), are included.
