Group Rehabilitation with Discussions and Yoga

You are kindly invited to attend our courses! Thanks to generous sponsorship from CURO and Cancerhjälpen we are able to offer the courses free of charge. The courses are given exclusively in Swedish. In order to participate, you need to have at least basic knowledge of the Swedish language.

CANCER ILLNESSES and their treatments often imply great physical and emotional strain. This may manifest itself as pain, stiffness of the body and/or lymph oedema. In addition, insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, and existential brooding may set in. Group discussions and yoga may then be helpful and supportive methods to help you handle these troubles.

Group Rehabilitation with discussions and yoga is a program that has been given since 2006. Around 1500 patients have attended our courses so far, and many return for following runs. A majority of these patients feel that the combination yoga and group discussions helps them handle the anxiety and stress that may arise in connection with receiving the diagnosis, treatment and life after that. Other difficulties that may be alleviated are sleeping disorders, trouble to breath, pain, stiffness and stress. Many people bear witness to that the yoga and conversations ameliorate the general quality of life.

The courses are intended for individuals suffering from cancer illness, individuals who are being treated for or who have finished their treatment for cancer. They will provide various techniques to handle and alleviate adverse effects during and after medical treatment. They also provide an opportunity to meet and get to know people in a similar situation in life. You will hence get a chance to exchange thoughts and experiences.

One course comprises five course dates. Each course date begins with a two hour yoga class that includes:

  • Simple body movements/poses that limber up the body and improve blood circulation. The movements are sensitive to each and everyone’s individual needs and conditions without any demands on performance.
  • Breathing exercises to increase the oxygen supply. These contribute to relaxation and a sense of well-being.
  • Yoga Nidra, a method used to attain attentive, deep relaxation.
  • Meditation exercises aiming at attaining an inner calm.

The goal is completeness and balance by developing a harmonious interaction between body and mind. The instructions are given according to a classical yoga tradition, Satyananda yoga. Awareness is central to yoga – the idea of being fully present in the moment (mindfulness). Satyananda yoga also stresses the importance of self-acceptance – the ability to accept yourself just as you are in this moment – in body, in mind and in feeling.

After the yoga class, a 45 minute group discussion session follows. Various themes are brought up during the session: strengthening of patient self-reliance, problem solving techniques and/or methods based on acceptance and mindfulness.

The conversations pursue a cognitive perspective. They seek to give an increased and a renewed understanding of the thoughts and perceptions that so strongly influence our emotions and actions in different situations. A cognitive behavioural therapist and/or a nurse lead the discussion.

On occasion you have the opportunity to attend an art therapy session. Using colours is one way of releasing emotions and letting yourself step outside of the box.

The courses are based on self-therapy. They have pedagogical features to help you find new ways and strategies for handling life issues and problems related to the cancer illness.

We warmly welcome you!
