Helicopter Borne Intensive Care Unit

The intensive care helicopter is ready at any time of the day or night to pick up patients from accident and emergency hospitals or the injured from an accident. Thanks to the advanced medical equipment aboard the helicopter and the qualified crew, intensive care is provided throughout the flight.

The majority of patients suffer from head injuries or haemorrhaging in the brain. The second largest group of patients are accident victims with damage to many body organs. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of patients with severe multiple fractures, especially to the pelvis and spine.

The transport of premature babies in incubators is handled by an experienced team consisting of a neonatal specialist (paediatrician) and a children’s nurse.

In collaboration with the Astrid Lindgren Hospital, ECMO transport is provided for patients with serious pulmonary disease.

National Specialty

On the basis of medical quality standards and the ability of the helicopter to fly to hospitals in Sweden in a relatively short time, the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare has awarded the helicopter service at Uppsala University Hospital the status of National Medical Specialty.

Transport of emergency patients within Uppsala County

About half of the patients carried have been injured in road accidents or other accidents. 5–7 minutes from the alarm call being made, the helicopter is on its way to the injured. Patients with severe asthma or other life-threatening conditions can receive immediate help in their homes from an intensive care doctor.
