14th century

The earliest version of the hospital, Helgeandshuset, was established in 1302 on what is now Fyris Square - this was a church nursing home for the sick and the poor.

Two of the six employees at Helgeandshuset were priests. In today’s figures, that would be the equivalent of 2,600 hospital priests!

Helgeandshuset was used for 400 years, up to the year 1702 when the entire hospital building, apart from the hospital chapel, burned to the ground. It was, however, quickly rebuilt and remained in use.
